Frequently Asked Questions About Fat Transfer (fat injections)
How does Dr. Davie perform Fat Transfer (fat injections)?
Dr. Davie uses the Viafill™ System, which is a disposable system to remove or harvest the fat. The Viafill System filters the fat, and then Dr. Davie reinjects the autologous (patient’s own) fat in areas being treated. The Viafill™ System offers significant advantages over other dermal fillers and Fat Transfer (fat injections) methods.
Does ViaFill have FDA clearance?
The Viafill™ Fat Transfer (fat injections) System received 510(k) clearance from the FDA in December 2008.
Why does Dr. Davie use the Viafill™ System?
Viafill™ system is designed to maximize the number of live fat cells transplanted, increasing the potential for less fat resorption and longer lasting results. It differs from synthetic fillers such as Restylane, Juvederm or Radiesse because it uses the patient’s own fat (autologous fat) for filling lines and creases around the mouth or under the eyes for example. While Dr. Davie offers variety of synthetic fillers, fat transfer is the right choice for some patients, especially requiring substantial volume to be injected.
Where can I have fat transferred to?
The most common areas for fat transfer are the chin, nose, neck, jaw line, nasolabial folds (creases around the nose), marionette lines, brow, upper eyelids, temples, lips, hands, buttocks, body contour irregularities.
Are there side effects?
As with any surgical procedure, there is potential risk for infection, bleeding, and less than expected beneficial outcome. Because Dr. Davie uses the Viafill™ System for fat transfer, which uses the patient’s own tissue, there are no allergic or foreign-body reactions to be concerned about. No skin testing is necessary. The only side effects that may occur are local injection site reactions common to any injection procedure.

How does the Viafill™ System differ from other fat transfer methods?
The Viafill™ System uses gentle, manual aspiration rather than mechanical aspiration when harvesting fat cells. A patented transfer system and Viafill™ centrifuge (an apparatus that rotates at high speed and by centrifugal force separates substances of different densities) were designed to minimize damage to fat cells and increase the number of viable cells available for transplantation. Dr. Davie primarily uses the bottom layer of fat, which contains the largest number of viable cells, which allows more cells that are capable of living, to be injected. We believe a larger volume of viable cells leads to improved results.
